A Guy Named Gugut

Posted on: December 13, 2010

I wasn’t expecting to get starstruck at Nat’s first birthday bash but it sure was a pleasant surprise.

Your bro was very pleased to see an old classmate of his at the party – so much so he let out an expletive when they saw each other. (Your mother’s reaction: not so pleased hahaha).

As the kids enjoyed the fun and games, your brother whispers to me, See that guy? My old classmate? He’s the drummer from Moonpools And Caterpillars.

Meet Gugut Salgado…

…who we cornered and interviewed.

According to him, though the band is defunct all the members are still good friends and live no more than a few minutes from each other in San Clemente, CA (which is in the OC). I asked him how they came up with the band’s name and he just shrugged and said they wanted a cool, quirky name like Siouxie And The Banshees or something.

He seemed to be laughing at himself when recalling the Moonpools days – like it was a good, fun time but not something he missed terribly. Though he did say, that the band (a total of 3 Pinoys and their lone American female lead singer) would be game to perform again in Manila if someone were to set it up. (He remembers guesting on all the noontime shows to plug their gigs here in the mid-90s).

As for me – a fan – I just love their music because it was so relevant for what was going on in my life. I look back at it and laugh at myself too. (And miss the crazy, happy chaos of living in your house and all the adventures we had while still in school).

This is so cool! I would have been starstruck too. Hows about we (moon) pool all our funds together and bring them to the Philippines!
